ANZIIL Professional Development Group Statement

ANZIIL recognises that systemic and systematic change is required in the design and delivery of core curricula to allow for the mastery of information literacy concepts and skills in a sequential, hierarchical and developmental manner. ANZIIL also appreciates the fundamental role of libraries and librarians as critical partners in the educational process.

In support of this mission, ANZIIL is committed to leading in the development of appropriate pedagogical and strategic knowledge and skills of tertiary librarians (PD-IL).

Aim:

To facilitate, foster, enhance and/or develop professional development opportunities for librarians teaching within the higher education and VET sectors which:

  • support the embedding of information literacy within teaching, learning and research to foster the principles of lifelong learning
  • through the provision of such PD opportunities as courses, workshops and a range of print and electronic resources

Outcomes:

  1. Consistent, ongoing, timely and relevant information literacy-related professional development (PD-IL) for tertiary librarians
  2. Innovative teaching and learning practice which meets the increasingly sophisticated information literacy needs of a diverse and complex student population
  3. Quality support of collaborative teaching models and teaching and learning partnerships between library professionals, faculty and instructional designers in the ongoing planning, development and implementation of initiatives and activities critical to the educational process
  4. Informed teaching, learning and information literacy discourse within and across institutions which addresses the critical relationships between curriculum design, teaching strategies, learning outcomes and the development of information literacy
  5. Student-centred learning experiences which reflect curriculum integrated and embedded approaches to the development of information literacy

Strategies

(for meeting the professional development outcomes as stated above):

  1. Dissemination of information regarding existing PD-IL programs and courses
  2. Development of a sustainable program or model of PD-IL
  3. Creation of new, and/or dissemination of existing, support materials and resources
